What Is a Marine Ceramic Coating?
Marine grade ceramic coating is a nanotechnology-based liquid polymer that chemically bonds with the surface to create a hydrophobic, UV-resistant, and corrosion-resistant barrier. Unlike waxes or sealants that quickly degrade, ceramic coatings can offer multi-year durability, enhanced gloss, and reduced grime, grit and dirt.
Why Ceramic Coat Yachts?
- Adds an invisible barrier to help repel dirt, debris, fingerprints and other environmental contaminants.
- Easier to clean, less water spots, less finger prints, easier to remove dirt.
- Adds a robust barrier that blocks some UV rays, significantly extending the life and vibrancy of exterior surfaces.
- Creates a hard, glass-like layer that significantly enhances the gloss, depth, and clarity of the yacht’s surface
- Increases the resistance to minor scratches, swirl marks, and scuffs from everyday wear and tear
Ceramic Coating Application Process
Every yacht is unique, which is why we begin with a personalized consultation to understand the vessel’s program and determine where Paint Protection Film (PPF) and Ceramic Coating will provide the greatest benefit.
- Consultation: We evaluate the yacht’s usage, conditions, and goals to recommend the most effective application areas for PPF and Ceramic Coating.
- Decontamination: Start with a clean environment by removing water spots, fingerprints, smudges and dirt.
- Marine Grade Ceramic Coating Application: Prep the PPF surface and apply the ceramic coating in thin, small controlled areas.
- Cure Time and Final Results: Allow 3-4 days for proper cure time before covering or using the surface, use XPEL products to clean and maintain the ceramic coating.
- Reapplication: Based on the yacht’s usage and environmental exposures, ceramic coating will need to be reapplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Ceramic Coating does Weingarth Customs use?
We use XPEL Fusion Plus Marine Ceramic Coating for Yachts.
What’s the difference between ceramic coating and waxing?
Ceramic coating forms a semi-permanent bond to the surface creating a hardened layer that is far more resistant to the environmental conditions on yacht surfaces. Waxes sit on top of the surface which degrade quickly, typically a few weeks, requiring frequent reapplication.
How long does a marine ceramic coating last?
The lifespan of a ceramic coating can last several years, depending on where it is applied, wear and tear, environmental conditions and aftercare.
Why ceramic coat over PPF?
When applied over PPF, ceramic coating creates an incredibly slick surface that repels water. This significantly reduces water spotting, makes cleaning much easier, and can even contribute to a "self-cleaning" effect as water beads up and carries dirt away. Ceramic coatings amplify the gloss and depth of the yacht's high gloss finish, giving it a stunning, mirror-like appearance. The ceramic coating acts as a sacrificial layer over the PPF, protecting the film itself from wear and tear, potentially extending the lifespan and clarity of the PPF.
How do I know if I need to re- Ceramic Coat?
The most noticeable sign is when water no longer beads tightly and rolls off the surface as effectively as it used to. Another is when the super-glossy, reflective finish may start to dull. If the "self-cleaning" effect diminishes, and the surface becomes dirtier faster or is harder to clean. If the surface becomes more susceptible to water spots or other contaminants.
